The British Columbia employment growth for the occupational group, Trades, Transport & Equipment Operators has increased by 45% for 2002 to 2005 and construction currently employs approximately 200,000 workers.
Low interest rates, the 2010 Winter Olympics, commercial and industrial developments and government infrastructure project are creating many new opportunities for trained tradespeople.
Through a variety of partnerships with ACCESS, BCIT, Line Contractors’ Association, Industry Training Authority and others we have offered training in the fields of construction, piping, steel fabrication & welding, and painting & decorating. Also, we offered a pilot Academic Upgrading program for those wanting to work as a Power Line Technician and hope to expand this to other trades.
Our graduates have gone on to interesting and challenging jobs and many have continued their training as registered apprenticeship trainees.
We are nearing completion of renovations to our trades training facilities at 237 East 5th, which is adjacent to our main campus. The new classrooms, student lounge and workshops will enable the NEC to offer more trades training to meet the rapidly expanding skilled labour needs.
