Main Content
Library
The NEC Native Education College Library has been in operation since the founding of the NEC Native Education College. Although small, our collection is developing, with a focus on Aboriginal content. The Library is located at the top of the central stairs to the right (Room 201).
Library Collection
The Library Collection includes books, audio-visuals, reference materials, government documents, a selection of newspapers, magazines and newsletters all with a focus on First Nations content. We are continuing to develop the Library collection. The Library is open to everyone, but only registered students and staff of the College have borrowing privileges. Research students from others schools are welcome to use library materials, and the student photocopier (10 cents per page).
- Students and staff can borrow materials free of charge.
- Students must show their current NEC student card in order to borrow any materials.
- Students may borrow materials for a period of two weeks.
- The Library may grant a one-week extension for books that have not been reserved by another borrower.
- There is a $1.00 per day library fine imposed on all late materials.
- There is a borrowing limit of three items. This number may be extended by permission and discretion of the Librarian up to two weeks.
- Reference materials and NEC videos may not be removed from the Library.
- Students must return all books before their transcript is issued at the end of the semester.
Library Hours
The library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday Please note that during the first two weeks of semester when students are receiving their books en masse from the Bookstore, the Library may be closed for short periods during the day so that the Library staff, who also operate the Bookstore, can service students effectively.

Other Library Services
Library orientations and research skills workshops are available for all classes on request from instructors or coordinators. Students can seek individual assistance from Library staff at any time.
Students wishing to view videos missed in a class presentation must book the library television and VCR through the library staff, and may only view before class, during lunch break or after classes. Students must have written permission from their Instructor to watch the video during class time.
The Library also offers computer access to students. There are three student computers that can be booked by students to complete class assignments. Students may also do research and check e-mail. NO GAMES OR DOWNLOADING ARE PERMITTED. Library staff is available to assist students with basic word processing and Internet skills, although this is no replacement for taking a computer word processing course.
There is a .10 cent per page printing fee for printing from the Library printer.
24 Hour Notice Required for AV Bookings
In order to book audio-visual equipment, we require 24 hours notice. Please note that this policy is strictly adhered to. Outreach instructors may phone in their orders, but note that the 24 hours policy also applies. If you are ordering by phone, do not just leave a message on voicemail alone. You must speak with someone in person to confirm that your equipment is available.
Agi Paul, Library Assistant ext. 310 or Donna Davison, Library Coordinator ext. 311.
All audio-visual equipment will be delivered according to the time schedule as shown the Audio-Visual sign out sheet to follow. When you are through using the equipment at the end of class, please send someone to the library to inform the Library Staff that the equipment is ready for pick-up.
DO NOT leave audio-visual equipment unattended in classrooms or hallways. All small equipment and videos must be signed out and picked up from the Library and returned to the Library. (Sign out form to follow)
At the College, we have a limited amount of audio-visual equipment, so we ask that you do not book equipment that you are not using out of respect for the needs of other staff. If you have booked equipment, and have decided not to use it, please inform us as we can make it available to others, with the appropriate notice.
Do not ask custodial staff to get you AV. All AV must be ordered through the Library not only for classroom use but also special events.
Bookstore
The NEC Native Education College Bookstore is located on the main floor of the College, in the central part of the building just south of the furnace room. The bookstore maintains all of the book lists for each program and a price list for all books and materials ordered by the bookstore, this information is available on request. The bookstore carries all textbooks and supplies that are required for our classes as ordered by the program coordinators as well as a small selection of gift items and luxury items.
Students may purchase extras such as coffee cups, travel mugs, book bags, flash drives, and t-shirts for cash from the bookstore. Parking Passes, Lockers and locks, Fast Trax stickers and Transcripts are also purchased with cash from the bookstore or from Donna in the Library.
Hours of Operation
Hours are based on student need. Extended hours will be in place during semester intakes. At all other times the Bookstore will be opened as needed, between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm Monday – Friday. For Bookstore related assistance please ask for Donna or Agi in the Library.
Purchasing Books
Students are responsible to ensure that all paperwork has been completed and sent to their sponsoring agency. The sponsorship must be in place and approved before students can charge books. It is the Student's responsibility to see that they are fully registered and funding is in place before coming to the bookstore.
If the student is paying for their materials themselves, they need a certified cheque or a money order made payable to the NEC - Native Education College in the exact amount. Payment may be made to the Administrative Assistants desk at the top of the stairs to the left. Students require a paid receipt to pick up their books. Students may also pay with cash. The NEC bookstore does not accept credit cards, or personal cheques.
Bookies “Friends of the Library”
Are you interested in becoming more involved with the development of our library? Do you have suggestions for resources? If so, please see Donna about participating in our “Bookies Club.” Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month. The Bookies Club is the Library Advisory Committee. The Committee helps plan the direction and focus of the Library, the growth and expansion, needed resources and special needs.
