Educational Outreach

The Native Education College works with First Nations and Aboriginal community agencies to deliver accredited post-secondary and adult basic education programs in locations throughout British Columbia. The Educational Outreach department combines academic excellence with a strong commitment to First Nations community-based education. All content and curriculum builds on community knowledge and is taught from a First Nations perspective. We also partner with local public colleges to ensure educational excellence.

The goals of the Educational Outreach program are to:

  • Respond to the educational and professional development needs of Aboriginal communities in British Columbia
  • Balance academics with the traditional cultural knowledge and values of local Aboriginal communities
  • Provide easier accessibility to advanced education in community settings.

Educational Outreach Program Delivery

Any of the courses and programs offered by the NEC Native Education College can be delivered on site in your community or offered in partnership with Aboriginal educational institutions, such as colleges andlearning centers. If your community or agency is interested in a training program or workshop or development project, please contact the Associate Dean of EducationalOutreach to discuss your training needs.

Educational Outreach Program Partnerships

Many Aboriginal communities and organizations have facilities and staff for offering post-secondary training. The Native Education College establishes partnerships with communities to allow them to use our curriculum resources to provide programs of study accredited with the Private CareersTraining Institute Agency (PCTIA) and articulated with many colleges and universities in BC.

Other services offered through the NEC’s Education Outreach department include:

  • Community training needs assessment
  • Local Aboriginal college development projects
  • Programming tailored to the needs of communities and Aboriginal organizations
  • Professional development workshops for Aboriginal organizations
  • Curriculum development projects
  • Customized training
  • Cultural sensitivity training for non-Aboriginal organizations.

Learning FuturesCommunicating Educational Visions
Professional Development Opportunity

  • Learning Futures is a one-day workshop on developing and implementing a community education plan.
  • Learning Futures is designed for PSE Coordinators, Economic Development Officers, councilors, employment and training officers and other professionals in First Nations communities.
  • This professional development opportunity is delivered free of charge to First Nations communities with between 10 and 15 registered participants.
  • Travel, food and accommodation must be provided for the facilitators as well as a classroom or boardroom facility.
  • Learning Futures facilitators are specialists in Aboriginal Educationat at a post-graduate level.

Workshop Learning Outcomes
On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Outline the educational accomplishments of your community.
  2. Provide an educational demographic profile of your community.
  3. Identify community resources and networking possibilities.
  4. Describe the multi-year educational needs of your community.
  5. Explain the benefits of Aboriginal control of Aboriginal education.
  6. Develop processes to determine future community educational needs.
  7. Identify the key issues to be solved through educational planning
  8. Communicate your educational vision to your community
  9. Decide what efforts to invest in educational plan components in relation to needs.
  10. Identify appropriate steps, phases or processes that are suitable to educational planning.
  11. Identify multi-stakeholder funding strategies.
  12. Identify the components of a Community Educational Plan.
  13. Develop a timeline and action items for your educational plan.
  14. Create checklists for the purposes of implementing educational plans.
