General Information

Who is Eligible?

Applicants to NEC must be 19 years of age or older on the first day of the first semester of attendance; or have a Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent; or be 18 years of age and out of school for at least a year.

Mature Applicants are applicants who are 21 years of age or older and who do not have a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. NEC welcomes your application as a mature student and will consider a combination of academic skills and relevant experience in assessing applications for admission. Applicants may have to complete NEC’s placement assessment.

Assessments

English
Applicants may be assessed on their English skills.  The assessment results will determine their English level and assist the applicant in selecting the appropriate course that best suits their needs. 

Math

Applicants for the Adult Basic Education, Applied Business Technology and Aboriginal Tourism Management programs may be required to do a math assessment to assess their math level.

Aboriginal Adult Basic Education applicants are (if possible) requested to produce transcripts of their last grade attended. These documents and the results of NEC placement assessments will determine course selection.

Prior Learning Assessment
An applicant with previous educational, employment or community service experience may be given credit for specific courses by completing a prior learning assessment process. The Coordinator will assist the applicant in this process which may include a challenge for credit by writing the major exam and accepting the mark, and/or developing a portfolio that demonstrates competence in course outcomes.  To receive the credit on their transcript, applicants must pay the regular course fee.

Registration
Once an applicant has finalized their funding, they are eligible to register.  Registration will not be processed until all fees are paid or the college received a sponsorship letter.

Student Cards
Registered students will be issued a student card during the first week of classes. This card acts as a library card and as official NEC Native Education College identification.  Cards are available in the Admissions Department.

Student Council
Student Council is responsible for organizing student activities and events. A member of the Student Services team advises and consults with the Student Council. Nominations and elections for the executive committee are held in the fall of each year.  Positions of Chief, Vice Chief, Treasurer, Social Director and Recreation Director are held for a full academic year commencing in the fall.

NEC Kitchen
Staff at the NEC kitchen offer students and staff nutritious food at fair prices. The kitchen is open for breakfast and lunch and serves beverages and snacks until 2:00 pm

Parking
Parking is available behind the building, on a first come first serve basis with a valid NEC parking pass. Parking passes are available from the bookstore for $10.00 per student or part time instructor and $15.00 for a full time staff member.  Parking passes are valid from September 1 to August 31 of each year and must be renewed yearly.

Access for People with Disabilities

The longhouse is wheelchair accessible with ramp access to both floors located off of Fifth Avenue. An elevator is located inside the building on the north side. Wheelchair accessible washrooms can be found on both floors. Designated parking is available for persons with disabilities.

One pay phone is located in the foyer of the main floor of the building
for student use.

Location
The NEC Native Education College  is conveniently located at 285 East 5th Avenue, Vancouver, BC. just east of Main St. Transit connections are just a few steps away. We are a seven minute walk from the Main Street Skytrain Station (Science World) and just a few blocks south of Broadway.

Renting Space at NEC
NEC classrooms and foyer are available for rental. Availability and rates are dependant on activity, staffing needs and our classroom schedule.  Please contact our building manager at 604-873-3772 for information.
