Aboriginal Community Tourism Trainer Program

Many Aboriginal tourism businesses recognize the need for employee training and certification. The Aboriginal Community Tourism Trainer program assists these employees to become certified through a national tourism industry process.

Areas of certification include:

Campground Operator
Front Desk Agent
Guest Services Attendant
Heritage Interpreter
Housekeeping/Room Attendant
Tour Guide
Reservation Sales Agent
Special Events Co-ordinator

The community tourism trainers will take one course to learn how to mentor other tourism employees through the certification process and to encourage and educate members of their nation about ecotourism and cultural tourism business opportunities.

The program is offered in partnership with Selkirk College in Nelson, BC.
Instructors from both the Native Education college and Selkirk College will participate.

Nationally in 2003, Aboriginal tourism was approximately a $270 million industry, representing over 1,300 businesses and 14,000 to 16,000 jobs. Yet, according to aboriginal Tourism Team Canada, training is needed at all levels to provide the skills required to consistently deliver Aboriginal tourism products. This course provides Aboriginal people who are certified by the Canadian Tourism Commission, or in the process of certifying, the skills they need to mentor others in their community. The focus is on facilitating small groups of people in a workshop setting, mentoring peers in the process of certification and providing a tourism industry information in a community setting.
